Andrew & Jennifer | Surprise Proposal | Kansas City, MO
Capturing a surprise proposal is always a thrilling challenge, especially when the details come together at the last minute. Andrew reached out to me just hours before his big moment, wanting to have the proposal photographed. What followed was a whirlwind of coordination, anticipation, and a few unexpected twists that made this experience unforgettable. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how I captured Andrew and Jennifer’s beautiful surprise proposal and the engagement photos that followed.

Preparing for the Unexpected
Andrew’s plan was simple yet heartfelt: take Jennifer out for dinner, then return to the home they had just closed on, where he would pop the question. The catch? I had very little information to work with. Andrew’s mother was my main point of contact and the mastermind behind the setup. She arranged flowers, candles, and champagne to create the perfect romantic atmosphere on the back deck.
Andrew also sent me a playlist earlier that day, so I brought my Bluetooth speaker to set the mood. But I still wasn’t sure how the proposal would unfold. Would I stay hidden until after the question? Should I be obvious when they walked in? The only clear instruction was to shoot through the window from inside the house, capturing the moment on the back deck.
The Moment of Truth
After Andrew’s mother finished the setup, she left, saying they were on their way. I had expected her to stay hidden with me, but I was alone. I crouched behind the window with my 25-pound camera, trying to stay out of sight. Ten minutes passed, and I needed a break. As soon as I stood up to stretch, I heard the keys at the door.
Panicking, I quickly restarted the music, grabbed my camera, and ducked back into position. I feared they might have heard me. Andrew seemed to be searching for me, while Jennifer had already caught on to what was happening. Despite this, I stayed hidden as Andrew led her to the back porch.
That’s when they spotted me, my large 28-70mm lens pressed against the window. Andrew’s face showed relief, then a deep blush as he realized the moment had arrived. Jennifer said yes, and the joy in their eyes was unforgettable.
Capturing More Than Just the Proposal
After the proposal, I stayed for another 45 minutes to take couple portraits. The newly engaged couple was glowing with happiness, and the relaxed atmosphere made for some beautiful engagement photos. The setting sun cast a warm light over the scene, enhancing the intimate feel of the images.
This experience reminded me how important it is to be flexible and ready for anything in wedding photography. Every couple’s story is unique, and sometimes the best moments happen when you least expect them.
